Which Class Should I Play?
Choosing your first class in SWTOR
Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) is an MMO (massively multiplayer online game) RPG (role-playing game) developed by BioWare. BioWare are a game development studio who have built a reputation founded on their story driven adventure games and SWTOR is no different.
At the heart of SWTOR is its Galaxy spanning space opera story set in the Star Wars Universe. It takes place around 300 years into the future of the events in the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games and over 3,600 years before the events of the Star Wars films. Although no longer considered cannon it is a homage to the characters and locations known and beloved by Star Wars fans.
Each class has a story
SWTOR has 8 character classes and each class has its own story. This means choosing your first class can become a very significant contribution to your overall enjoyment of the game.
I recommend choosing your first class based on which character class story appeals to you the most.
Once you have chosen a character class and created your character you are unable to change it. However a player is able to create multiple characters per account and so will be able to play through all 8 character class stories at some point.
Republic or Empire
There are two faction alignments in SWTOR - Galactic Republic and Imperial Empire. Its 8 character class stories are split evenly between 4 Galactic Republic class stories and 4 Imperial Empire class stories. Your character will be aligned to a faction based on the chosen character class story - for the most part.
Dark Side or Light Side
While your character may be aligned to a specific faction based on the chosen character class story this does not immediately mean the difference between 'good guys' and 'bad guys'. Each story includes many choices that will dictate the outcome of major plot points. Some choices will gain Light Side alignment while others will gain Dark Side alignment. The player has control over their character's decisions and the consequences within the game world.
Jedi Knight - Galactic Republic
A classic story of Jedi vs Sith and the one that is most comparable to the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games before it. Race across the Galaxy in search of the Sith Emperor who threatens the lives of billions.
If you are looking to play a classic Jedi story then this is recommended without doubt. It is an easy place to start if you are a new player and unsure which story to choose.
Sith Warrior - Imperial Empire
A story about becoming the most feared Sith in the Empire as the apprentice of a Dark Council member with ambitions of starting a new war against the Republic.
The story shares a lot of parallels with Darth Vader in his prime as the Emperor's Executioner.
Jedi Consular - Galactic Republic
A Jedi story of serenity, diplomacy and peace for those who love to seek knowledge and wisdom. Use diplomacy to gather allied forces and help the Republic defend against the threat of the Empire.
If you love the Code of the Jedi and wish to be a benevolent presence like Luminara or Shaak Ti then this is the path to walk.
Sith Inquisitor - Imperial Empire
Beginning as a slave you are set on a path of power and influence. Quickly learning the importance of Sith politics, scheming and deception as you begin to rise through the ranks of the Sith hierarchy.
A story about the search for the Unlimited Power of the Dark Side through forbidden knowledge and rituals.
Smuggler - Galactic Republic
A very clear homage to Han Solo - complete with Wookiee, hard headed princess and naive farm boy. While searching the Galaxy for riches and avoiding Imperials you strike an unlikely alliance with a Republican politician.
For those who fancy themselves as a space scoundrel and the captain of their own fate - complete with witty one liners. A story written with a lot of humour.
Imperial Agent - Imperial Empire
A cold war espionage story filled with paranoia and betrayal. While working for Imperial Intelligence you uncover a plot that threatens both the Republic and the Empire.
If you are looking to play an Imperial non force user then this story is highly recommended. Unlike the other stories this has multiple endings based on your choices.
Trooper - Galactic Republic
Become a member of the legendary Havok Squad and track down traitors of the Republic who have turned their backs on everything they had stood for by joining the Empire.
A story about being a solider of the Republic and fighting on the front lines in a war against the Empire.
Bounty Hunter - Imperial Empire
As a mercenary for hire you aim to join the ranks of the Mandalorians by winning the Great Hunt. A competition for glory and the test of a warrior's skill. However a confrontation with a Jedi forces your hand into seeking job opportunities from Imperial employers.
The story that gives you the opportunity to play as a Mandalorian.
